Word Processing Terminology


LAYOUT

Refers to where your work is placed on the page. Is it straight? Is it in the middle of the paper?

BRACKETS
These can be used to enclose extra words or sentences to help give meaning to your work (like this).

CAPITALS
Initial = first letter of the word e.g. Letter
Block = all in capitals e.g. LETTER
Spaced = all in capitals and one space between letters e.g. L E T T E R
(remember to leave three spaces between words)

CASES
Upper case = capitals
Lower case = not capitals

HORIZONTAL CENTERING
This means centering your work across the page with equal margins (white space) on both sides. Most word processors/computers have automatic centering

VERTICAL CENTERING
This means centering your work in the middle of the page with equal margins (white space) at top and bottom. Most word processors/computers have automatic centering

CURSOR
The flashing point on your screen, which shows where the point of insertion will occur. It moves along as you press the keys

DEFAULT SETTINGS
Refers to the automatic settings used by your word processor/computer for page setup, layout and printing. It may be necessary to change these settings if they are not what you require.

POSTURE
Refers to the correct position of the operator and their equipment to allow for ease of operation and avoidance of physical stress.

LANDSCAPE
Paper is used with the longest side at the top.

ALIGNMENT
Block = each line starts at a set margin
Centered = horizontally and/or vertically in the middle of the space provided

Justified = spaces are automatically added so that the right margin is even


LINE SPACING
Single = no spacing between lines

Double = one extra line turn-up between lines

Block = all lines including the first begin at the left margin
Indented = the first line begins 5 spaces to the right of the left margin
Hanging = the first line begins 3 - 5 spaces to the left of the left margin

All work is aligned at the right margin

15.
Paper is used with the shortest side at the top.

Operators should sit in a comfortable relaxed position with feet flat on the floor and back straight.

17.
All work should be proofread before printing. Work should be proofread after the spell-check is used. Proofreading picks up words typed twice and also words that sound the same but are spelt incorrectly.

18.
Depressed while typing the character keys for capitals and the number keys for symbols.

19.
Depressed for typing many capitals or symbols at a time.

20.
Used for listing items in columns with equal space between them and equal margins.

21.
The term used for underlining text.
